Well, welcome everyone. I'm your host, Jacqui Adewole and this is the Bible Basics Podcast, where we break down the basics of the Bible into understandable bite-sized chunks. Today we're stepping into a new stretch of the Bible. We just spent time in the first five books that focused on God's relationships with individuals that led to God forming a people called Israel and giving them his instructions on how to live. We followed them out of Egypt through the wilderness and right up to the edge of the promised land. So what happens next?

What The History Books Cover

The next section of the Old Testament is commonly called the history books. These twelve books from Joshua through Esther continue Israel's story after those first five books. They show what happened as Israel entered the Promised Land and began life as a nation. Battles, judges, kings, a kingdom that splits into two, exile, a return home for some while others remain in foreign lands. The history books take us through all of it. This episode is looking at the full journey, kind of an overview before we slow down and explore each part. You can think of this episode as a map. It'll help you recognize where Israel is, what has happened, and where the story's going. Now these books come from different writers and were written over many years. The events they describe span roughly a thousand years from Israel's entrance into the Promised Land through exile, return, and life under Persian rule. They help the people of Israel remember where they come from and understand how division and exile happened, and find hope for the future. These books tell us what happened, but they also help us understand what these events meant. They show how Israel's choices, their leaders, and relationship with God shape the nation. They show that choices have consequences, and that God remains faithful to his purposes even when his people are unfaithful. So let's see what these history books say.

A Three Part Roadmap

We're going to slow down this story and we'll approach it across three stretches of time. First, life in the land, right after Israel arrives. Then the kings and the kingdom, when Israel becomes a nation and later splits in two. And last, what happens after exile when some of the people return home under Persian rule?

Joshua Judges Ruth In The Land

So let's start with life in the land. The book of Joshua tells how Israel enters the promised land and starts to settle it, though a lot of the land isn't fully secured yet. The book of Judges follows what happens next, a repeated pattern. Israel drifts from God, runs into trouble, and God raises up a rescuer to bring them back. And Ruth, that's a quieter story from the same stretch of time about loyalty and redemption inside one ordinary family, a family that turns out to matter a lot

Kings Temple Split And Decline

later. Next, the kings and kingdom. Israel asks for a king and gets three in a row, Saul, then David, then Solomon. That part of the story is told in first and second Samuel and first and second Kings. Under David and Solomon, the nation grows strong, and Solomon builds the temple in Jerusalem, the place where God's presence lived among them. After Solomon dies, the United Kingdom doesn't last. It splits in two. The northern half keeps the name Israel. The southern half becomes Judah. Yes, same name as the whole nation. Hold on to that, it does trip people up. First and second chronicles retell much of the same story from a different angle, with more focus on David's family and the temple. Both halves drift from God and both eventually fall. Assyria conquers the northern kingdom, later Babylon conquers the southern kingdom. Second Chronicles tells us God kept sending warnings over and over through his prophets because he didn't want to give up on his people. They wouldn't listen. Judgment came, first through Babylon's armies, then through exile, forced out of their homeland and resettled somewhere else.

Exile And A Shock Ending

Seventy years of it, just as the prophet Jeremiah had said it would be. By every measure it looked like the end of the story. Listen to how Second Chronicles actually ends. What I'm going to do is read Second Chronicles chapter 36, verses 22 and 23. In the first year of Cyrus, King of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah, the Lord moved the heart of Cyrus, King of Persia, to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also to put it in writing. This is what Cyrus of Persia says. The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Any of his people among you may go up, and may the Lord their God be with them.

Return Rebuild And Esther’s Risk

Wow. Life after exile. That's the last section. Some of the exiled people return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. Ezra arrives later to teach God's law. Nehemiah leads the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls, and Esther tells what happened to the Jewish people who stayed behind in Persia. An orphan named Esther becomes queen and risks her life to save her people from destruction. God's name is never even mentioned in that book, but his care for his people shows up in every chapter.

What It Means For Us Today

So what did it mean to them? Well, for later generations of Israelites, these books explained where they came from and how their nation reached division, defeat, and exile. Their history showed that unfaithfulness brought serious consequences, and that God had not abandoned his promises even when his people had. And what does it mean for us? Well, God and his relationship with Israel stand at the center of these books. The king's battles and major events matter because they show how people responded to God and how God remains faithful to his purposes. You may have not experienced a divided kingdom or a return from exile, but you may know what it feels like to look back at your life and wonder whether God was present when things did not go the way you hoped. These books show God at work through victory and failure, judgment and rebuilding. The story wasn't over for Israel. And it's not over for you either.
