Greetings listeners. In part one of this episode, we explored the foundations of biblical wisdom and poetry, two powerful genres in scripture that speak to both our minds and hearts. In this episode, we'll continue that journey, diving deeper into each genre and discovering how they work together to guide and inspire us. They work together to guide and inspire us. Whether you're looking for practical advice or words that stir your soul to draw you closer to God, there's something here for you. Well, welcome everyone. I'm your host, Jacqui Adewole, and this is the Bible Basics Podcast, where, weekly, we break down the basics of the Bible into understandable, bite-sized chunks.
Jacqui:Wisdom literature and poetry in the Bible are two unique genres, each serving a distinct purpose. While both communicate God's truths, they do so in very different ways. Wisdom literature it's about content. Wisdom literature offers practical guidance for living well in God's world. It focuses on timeless truths that help us make wise decisions, navigate relationships and understand life's biggest questions. For instance, the book of Proverbs it is packed with advice for daily living. One of my favorite examples is Proverbs 3: 13 through 14, which says Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. This verse reminds us that wisdom is a treasure worth seeking. And then there's Ecclesiastes. Here we see the deep reflections on life's fleeting nature. Ecclesiastes 3:1 says there is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens. This reminds us to embrace life's seasons, even the hard ones.
Jacqui:Now, while wisdom literature is about what is being said, poetry is about how it's said, the style. Poetry uses creative techniques like parallelism, imagery and metaphor to make truths memorable and impactful. For example, much of the wisdom books of Proverbs and Job is written in poetic form. One of the most moving poetic lines comes from Job, 42: 5 through 6. My ears have heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore, I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes. Can't you feel the weight of Job's transformation in those words?
Jacqui:Poetry brings truth and wisdom to life in a way that stays with us long after we've read it. Consider Psalm 23: 1 and 2. The Lord is my shepherd. I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters. These words don't just inform, they comfort, painting a vivid picture of God's care and provision. So you might be wondering why any of this matters for us. Well, at the heart of wisdom, literature and poetry is this truth All scripture is God-breathed, as 2 Timothy, 3: 16, and 17 reminds us.
Jacqui:All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. That means wisdom, literature and poetry aren't just ancient writings or literary masterpieces. They're God's words to us. They carry his truth, his guidance and his heart for our lives. When we read these parts of the Bible, we're not just learning timeless lessons. We're hearing directly from God himself. Whether it's the practical advice of Proverbs, the deep reflections of Ecclesiastes or the heartfelt imagery of the Psalms, god uses these writings to teach us, correct us and equip us for every good work. Wisdom, literature and poetry matter because they remind us that God cares deeply about both our minds and hearts. He wants us to make wise decisions, grow in understanding and trust Him through life's ups and downs. These writings remind us that His Word is alive, active and deeply relevant, no matter the season we're in. Now here's an important point related to these genres Not all wisdom literature is poetry.
Jacqui:Some parts of Job and Ecclesiastes, for example, are written in prose, not poetry. And not all poetry is wisdom. Many psalms are songs of praise, lament or thanksgiving rather than wisdom teachings. Now let's look at how wisdom and poetry work together. Wisdom literature and poetry often overlap in the Bible but, as we discussed, they're not the same thing. Let me explain. Picture this Job 19:25 says I know that my Redeemer lives and that in the end he will stand on the earth. This is wisdom literature, but it's written as poetry. Do you feel the power in those words? Job's wisdom wrestles with suffering and hope, while its poetic structure makes it unforgettable. And speaking of poetic structure, we can even find that particular verse put to music in the oratorio Handel's Messiah.
Jacqui:So how do we start engaging with these rich parts of the Bible? Well, here are three simple but powerful tips to help you dive in. Tip one read slowly and reflect. Poetry and wisdom literature are meant to be savored, not rushed. Take your time to sit with the imagery, let the lessons sink in and ask God what he wants to teach you. These writings are designed to make you pause and think deeply about life, faith and God's character. Tip two look for practical application. Wisdom literature is incredibly practical, so try applying what you read to your daily life.
Jacqui:From Proverbs pick one verse to focus on this week. For example, Proverbs 27: 17 says as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another iron, so one person sharpens another. How can you intentionally invest in a friendship or mentoring relationship to grow together in faith? From Ecclesiastes reflect on what truly gives your life meaning. What temporary things are you chasing and how can you refocus on God's eternal purpose for you? And tip three let the poetry stir your heart.
Jacqui:Biblical poetry is meant to be experienced, not just read. Try reading a psalm aloud. Notice how the rhythm and repetition pull you in. For example, psalm 23 creates a sense of peace and trust as it describes God as our shepherd. Go a step further. Allow your imagination to enter into the experience the poet describes. Picture the images, feel the emotions and respond to the truths. God is speaking to you. Whether it's singing a psalm, praying a poetic prayer or meditating on a vivid image, let the poetry move you towards God.
Jacqui:In closing, engaging with wisdom and poetry in the Bible isn't just about gaining knowledge. They are about transformation. These writings are God's invitation to grow in understanding, feel his presence and live out his truths in meaningful ways. So take your time, slow down, reflect, apply and let the words of Scripture speak to both your mind and your heart. We'll dive into these specific books of wisdom and poetry individually in future episodes, so stay tuned for what's next. Until then, keep reading, keep seeking and keep growing in your faith.
